EDDZ – Ignorance (2022)

The brainchild of UK-based singer-songwriter Liam Taylor, EDDZ embraces all elements of art in his unique, eclectic sound. Described by Kerrie Cosh of BBC Introducing Northampton as “…modern alternative pop you need on your playlist”, I think it’s safe to say EDDZ is engaging. Yet, it is not only Cosh that sings his praises with critical acclaim from blogs like Rising Artists Music Blog, Find No Enemy, Punk Head and many more. The latest addition to his repertoire is the single ‘Ignorance’.

His first track in 2022, ‘Ignorance’ follows his well-received single ‘My Story’. Retaining a heavy synth-laden style there is a strong similarity to 80s synth-pop; however, a hint of rock-influenced guitars and drums insert a contemporary edginess. Reaching out into a kaleidoscopic soundscape, EDDZ tips you into a whirlpool of sound with ‘Ignorance’. Lost in a hazy ambience with a soul-stirring melodic arrangement, it is easy to be hypnotised by the single. One of my favourite parts is the movement from a keys solo to the catchy chorus – almost a breath in the hyped pop song.

While you can lose yourself easily in the charming melody, EDDZ showcases true depth in his lyricism. As with ‘Sorry’ and ‘My Story’, he uses personal narratives to share intimate tales with listeners. In ‘My Story’ EDDZ explored the effect of a cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, but ‘Ignorance’ is even more provocative. Looking at the actions of the British Government and “how the general public feels that in the long run turning a blind eye will be in their best interests”, EDDZ discusses controversial topics, although highly relevant. It is intriguing because the melody is whimsical, but the lyricism is far more profound.

Enchanting and hypnotic, EDDZ has turned my head with the thought-provoking ‘Ignorance’.
