Eddie Cohn – Who Or What I Was Before (2024)
While our team at The Other Side Reviews came across singer-songwriter Eddie Cohn in 2020, the US-based artist has been releasing music for two decades. Truthfully, his passion for music goes far beyond the early 2000s and back to when Cohn was three years old. Discovering a natural talent for the piano, Cohn taught himself to play the guitar and the drums as a child. Inspired by bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, he delved into and formed a connection with old-school grunge and indie-rock – an intense attachment which saw him establish himself in these scenes.
Following his well-received track ‘Broken Pieces Going Nowhere’, ‘Who Or What I Was Before’ is Cohn’s first release since 2022. Delving further into the 90s-style grunge sound, 2024 looks to be a gritty realm of creativity with ‘Who Or What I Was Before’ opening the gates. Unlike his 2022 material filled with synth-driven loops and instrumentation, the new single strips away the electric fuzz leaning toward acoustic simplicity.
Recorded and produced by Eddie Cohn (vocals, acoustic guitar, synth, piano and percussion) with Brett Farkas (electric guitar), Dan Lutz (bass), Jake Reed (drums and percussion) and Kevin Penner (mixing and mastering), ‘Who Or What I Was Before’ finds the line between mature sophistication and raw innocence in its sound. A bold brashness breaks free in rambunctious guitars and drums; however, the slip of piano and percussion offers a smooth calm shuddering across the melody. Interestingly, while the melody is a line between gentle and chaotic, the theme captures its organised insanity in a reflective way. Cohn explains:
“This past year was a big year for me in terms of looking inward and trying to fine-tune the way I live my life. I had a pretty big birthday and when you hit these markers in life… it certainly causes me to turn inward and reflect on where I’ve been and where I want to go. I think about the people in my life or the habits I’ve created, and I wondered which ones were good for my mind and which ones could be eliminated… I’d like to think we always have the ability to change and that’s sort of what this song is about…”
