Eddie Cohn – Freedom (2020)

Based in one of the hubs of entertainment, Los Angeles – that’s in the USA to be exact – Eddie Cohn has built up a superb music career over the last 30 years. Meeting and working with Grammy award-winning artists, established names and reputable collaborators, Cohn has, in his own words, “met some amazing musicians living in Los Angeles”.

Alright, so he met some people but what about Eddie Cohn himself? An alternative meets indie-rock singer-songwriter, Cohn has been on the scene for approximately 15 years. He released his critically acclaimed debut album If I’m Happy It Ends in 2005 with guitarist Bruce Watson. Since then he has toured the USA, played music festivals and was even a featured artist on the iTunes store’s ‘New and Noteworthy’ section. 15 years after his debut release, Eddie Cohn shares his eclectic single ‘Freedom’.

Joined by Bruce Watson (guitars and bass), Dan Lutz (bass), Jake Reed (drums and percussion) and Phil Peterson (cello), multi-instrumentalist Cohn returns with a politically-charged anthem. The first single off his upcoming album Dystopian Days, ‘Freedom’ showcases Cohn’s innovativeness, versatility and flexibility as an artist. Sonically, he adopts a more Peter Gabriel folk-rock sound with steady drums, light-hearted percussion and well-placed guitars throughout the track. Melodically, it is a bit of a “mish-mash” of instrumentation; however, the prominent vocals seem to draw all the elements together resulting in distorted cohesion (does that make sense?).

Typically inspired by personal experiences, relationships and love, Cohn’s previous work can melt hearts with the nostalgic narrative. ‘Freedom’ is slightly different with the narrative focusing primarily on the sociopolitical issues in modern society. Once again using a personal narrative, Cohn controversially seeks truth in a mind-numbing world.

“This record and the songs were inspired by the strange world created by the pandemic and Covid-19. Polarisation is on the rise, truth is hard to come by and I wonder if the world will ever look the same.” – Eddie Cohn on ‘Freedom’

Fusing tribal beats with folk-rock undertones, Cohn breaks boundaries with his eclectic ‘Freedom’. If you are looking for an effortless soundscape, then here you have it. In my opinion, this is definitely one of those songs that grabs you by the wrist, drags you to the front of a peaceful protest and has you dancing along to the beat…just without leaving the comfort of your home.
