ear candy – better alone (2022)

After spending time bouncing about from musical genre to musical genre, producer/singer-songwriter Jamie Jordan decided to bring his own brand of indie-pop meets pop-rock to the masses. Hailing from the UK, Jordan (also known as ear candy) has a strong following but his coverage on the blogosphere is teaching new souls about the ear candy sound. Featured in Find No Enemy, York Calling and various playlists, this talented artist is turning heads on a global scale. The latest addition to his discography is ‘better alone’.

The third single from ear candy, ‘better alone’ is filled with dreamy pop vibes and edgy indie, um, edginess. Following the well-received ‘take my dreams away’, ‘better alone’ tips you into a sonic whirlpool with kaleidoscopic lights flitting before your eyes. Combining soothing synths, dynamic guitars and steady drums, the melodic arrangement has a flowing sensation; however, the vocals appear to bring obscurity to the smooth sound.

Rich, bold and powerful, ear candy demonstrates the sophistication behind his vocal execution. It is as if he first sings with softness and warmth, merely to be met by interspersed abrupt silences with one-liners adding a sharp eclecticism to ‘better alone’. A sort of raised eyebrow, shake of the head and “well, that’s the way it is then” attitude.

As with his previous material, ear candy uses personal narratives to share intimate stories with his listeners. Relatable, profound and significant, but in a bouncy way, ‘better alone’ has depth although its joviality touches on youthful naivety. An optimistic song, the track looks at difficult situations and overcoming them with strength and empowerment. ear candy explains that ‘better alone’ is “…about finally breaking free from the thing or person that you thought was so good for you but turned out to be very much the opposite. I wanted to capture that feeling of what it can be like to go through that but also the joy of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.”
