E.G. Phillips – The Albatross Song (Mellow Like) (2025)

When I first read that singer-songwriter E.G. Phillips earned a degree in Geography, it was a bit of an odd, amusing fact; however, on second thought, it seems quite apt as Phillips is a force of nature with an awe-striking intensity on the level of lightning storms, hurricanes, whirlwinds, and floods. An established character in the music industry, Phillips has garnered a loyal following over the years performing at festivals like SXSW, at notable venues like The Bowery Vault, featured on numerous radio stations, working with charity organisations, livened up open mic nights, and released internationally critically acclaimed albums and singles. Now, this teensy-tiny snippet of information is only the tip of the iceberg, but it hints at the ambition, passion and fiery love Phillips has for music.

This is not our introduction to E.G. Phillips – no sir, it is not our first time listening to his music at all. We came across Phillips in 2022 with his single ‘The Octopus Song’, and he’s astounded us each time something new crosses his Spotify. Today, we take a listen to the latest single, ‘The Albatross Song (Mellow Like)’.

If you find yourself sitting back and thinking, “Hmmm, isn’t ‘The Albatross Song’ one of the older E.G. Phillips singles”, you’re absolutely correct. A remake of his rambunctious opener to the 2019 album, At Home At Sea, ‘The Albatross Song (Mellow Like)’ shifts from toe-tapping, rambunctious, up-and-get-dancing to soft, soothing, cinematic wistfulness.

Joined by musicians Felipe Ubeda (guitar), Omree Gal-Oz (piano), Curtis Aikens (upright bass), Chloe Mendola (cello), and Daniel Riera (flute), the new single draws together the traditional classical tone of the orchestra and the wistful ambience of dreamy indie-folk. Melding in a kaleidoscopic sheen of sound, Grammy award-winning producer Nahuel Bronzini sprinkles his magical fairy dust with sophisticated elegance and youthful innocence.

“The contemplative vibe is closer to the song’s protean state when I started messing with the chords to an old cowboy song on Thanksgiving, clearly with birds on the brain.” – E.G. Phillips on ‘The Albatross Song (Mellow Like)’
