Dylan James – Boy’s Yard (2022)

Being emotional about something other than yourself or another person is something that has always been part of the music. Of course, the quality of that song or the ability of an audience to catch onto it depended not only on the emotions of the artist but how she/he was able to portray those emotions with music. Now that the FIFA 2022 World Cup is just ahead of us, and with the fact that football is now definitely a worldwide phenomenon, there is a slew of songs coming out with a football theme. Yet, it will probably be hard for many of those to reach the quality, charm and emotion of Dylan James’ latest single ‘Boy’s Yard.’

With an excellent melody and arrangement, and  James’ never over-the-top lyrics, it speaks about the artists’ personal relation to the sport in the best possible manner. Even though this is only James’ second solo single, he has spent the last half decade making a name for himself through his home demos.  With his confessional storytelling, singer-songwriter James blends together a mix of influences including folk-rock, 90s Britpop, and 70s lo-fi to create music full of raw emotion.

‘Boy’s Yard’ is about making dreams you have as a kid come true and believing one day you’ll be your hero – it’s a fairytale of hope and excitement by living your fantasy in the safety of your own backyard. Definitely a song to play as you watch the upcoming FIFA matches.
