Dylan Flynn and the Dead Poets – in your eyes (2024)

With their soul-stirring melodies and poetic lyrics, Irish band Dylan Flynn and the Dead Poets blend raw expression, bold creativity and pure communication in their music. For about five years, give or take, the quintet earned a reputation for DIY, down-to-earth musicality but with whimsical openness fluttering along the tunes. A brief glimpse at their back catalogue and one can hear a nod to Radiohead, Soundgarden and even Springsteen in their discography; however, as the years progressed Dylan Flynn and the Dead Poets found an eclectic sound that is entirely inimitable. The latest addition to their repertoire is the single ‘in your eyes’.

A strong contender in the Ireland/UK indie-rock scene, the group are quickly making a name for themselves as a critically acclaimed artist but they showcase eclecticism pushing beyond the conventional stereotype with originality and innovation. A taster to the group’s upcoming album the story after they’re gone, scheduled for release in October, ‘in your eyes’ sees Flynn and his crew weaving an Americana sound with indie rock. Flynn shares: “This track was the one that made me realise what direction we wanted to take the album in…”

As with most of their material, ‘in your eyes’ is not a song to be merely heard but felt in its immersive nature. Stepping into a sonic river, the bold drums and dynamic guitars slip across your skin like an old friend giving you a warm hug. The kaleidoscopic rush of sound whips past your head in the harmonic music; however, while this is a warm tune brimming with rich slips of Americana, it is not all sunshine and daisies. Harmonically joined in a beautiful symphony, the instruments and Flynn’s dulcet vocals masterfully bind together, but a hit of vulnerability and melancholy flutter in the tune.

A song about “denial and ignoring situations that are clearly making your life much harder…”, ‘in your eyes’ might be a whimsical, laidback tune but it makes clear that behind the smiles, the Irish group embodies profoundness and a brutally honest look into life as a young adult in the 21st century.
