Dull of Down – Lullaby Time/Raymond (2022)
Formed approximately two years ago, Finnish group Dull of Down has been described as blues-rock, grunge and hard rock, but the band simply call themselves “rock and roll”. Comprising the talents of Lasse Hyytinen, Jari Kärkkäinen and Kim Rintamäki, Dull of Down has a powerful, rich and bold sound to share with the masses. Not only are they turning heads in Finland, but the coverage on The Punk Head, Sinusoidal Music, Karl Is My Unkle, Roadie Metal and Edgar Allan Poets has the band reaching international audiences. The latest addition to their discography is the double-sided single ‘Lullaby Time/Raymond’.
Recorded, mixed by Miitri Aaltonen at Astia Studio and mastered by Steve Corrao in Nashville, USA, ‘Lullaby Time’ and ‘Raymond’ have strong hard rock, blues and melodic metal tones. With pounding drums, powerful guitar riffs and gruff vocals, ‘Lullaby Time’ immediately tosses you into a heavy sonic swirl; however, there seems to be a slight relief in the chorus as the instrumentation reaches a smoother tone – then it’s back to the hard-hitting, ground-shaking melody.
While Dull of Down retains a hard rock quality to their music, ‘Raymond’ is less upbeat and “in your face” than ‘Lullaby Time’. Alright, ‘Raymond’ is packed with as much rock attitude as ‘Lullaby Time’, but there is a harder classic rock style within it. As with the previous track, ‘Raymond’ also has a rather impressive guitar solo with powerful riffs leading up to a catchy chorus. You might be headbanging to ‘Lullaby Time’, but this song seems to have more swagger.
Bringing old-school rock to modern-day audiences, Dull of Down slithers in your ear, rambles about your cranium and slides down your spine. I would compare listening to the trio as a shot of tequila leaving you floored…. the thing is, they have more attitude than any shot of tequila could ever have.
