Duke Keats – Heavy Heartbreak (2024)

Known for his unparalleled ability to weave threads of profound lyricism, poignant melodies and soul-stirring tones, listening to Duke Keats is like appreciating a golden tapestry of sound. Constantly upping his ante, the UK-based artist has progressed from an interesting newcomer in 2019 to an established name in the UK independent pop/rock scene. To date, Keats has received regular support from international publications and has performed alongside acts like Penelope Isles, FEET and Marker Starling touring throughout the UK and across Europe. 2023 was a busy year for Keats and the journey continues with his latest single ‘Heavy Heartbreak’.

Following his well-received EP Dirty Glamour – an eloquent fusion of contemporary alternative pop and old-school glam rock, Keats enters 2024 with the new single ‘Heavy Heartbreak’. The first track from his upcoming EP BORNSTAR, Keats shows an evolution in sound highlighting not only his versatility but also artistic innovation. Effortlessly fusing various genres, the single itself is difficult to define – who knows what BORNSTAR will bring us.

Recorded and produced with Mase Le Long of indie-pop duo Batsch, ‘Heavy Heartbreak’ delicately aspects of indie rock, dream pop, psychedelic rock and a round of funk carrying the melody. Interestingly, while the various genres flow together, there is a hint of chaos existing in ‘Heavy Heartbreak’ as Keats flits from heavier guitars to light synths. A twinkling richness exudes from Keats’ warm vocals; however, just as it is warm, there is a cool drive in the execution.

A contradiction of sounds and styles, ‘Heavy Heartbreak’ brings together elements that might collide in a less sophisticated arrangement. Symphonic ebbs and flow give a harmonic sensation, but there is also a brash rawness tinged with vulnerability. An elegant but “all over the place” expression of self-discovery, Keats perfectly captures enthusiasm and excitement in a tender rush of music.

In addition to the single, Duke Keats has released an official music video for ‘Heavy Heartbreak’. You can view the video below or via YouTube. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
