Drops of Indigo – Shrouds of Illusion (2023)

Blending elements of folk and country with an acoustic flair to their music, Drops of Indigo is a Swedish group sharing their relaxing tones with audiences. Originally the project of Dabbe Karlsson (vocals and guitar) and Linda Kokaas (vocals and guitar), Drops of Indigo released four singles as a duo; however, the current line-up includes three more talented artists – Kristoffer Tryggmo (lead guitar), Isaak Zhorobaev (bass and keys/piano), and Sara Lundmark (drums). As a fivesome, Drops of Indigo have received international acclaim from PopMuzik, York Calling, Punk Head, and various playlists. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Shrouds of Illusion’.

Following their well-received single ‘The Old Town Bar’, ‘Shrouds of Illusion’ is the first release from Drops of Indigo in 2023. Retaining a strong folk flavour, ‘Shrouds of Illusion’ has the tinge of old-school folk with tinges of James Taylor. Yet, despite the nostalgia coursing through the melody, a modern-day indie-folk sound can be heard. Moreover, a sliver of indie-rock exists in the lead guitar adding a contemporary edge to the single.

Soft, soothing and gentle, ‘Shrouds of Illusion’ has a mellifluous flow quickly embracing you in a big sonic hug. However, while the group continue to entertain with their charming arrangements, the poetic lyricism brings a juxtaposition of calm melody and profound lyricism. It is this lyrical depth within a toe-tapping tune that showcases Drops of Indigo’s depth and sophistication.

“The song has a happy vibe to it as well as sharing a deep message. The lyrics describes an inner voice that is pushing a person down and hinders him from reaching dreams and goals in life… “You” in the lyrics can relate to that inner voice as well as other persons that are holding you back. The voices in the refrain invites me to see behind the shrouds of illusions created by negative thoughts and beliefs…” – Drops of Indigo on ‘Shrouds of Illusion’
