Draumr – Halcyon Slumber (2024)

From his four-track EP Nefelibata in 2015 to his 2020 single ‘Elsewhere Forever’ and the recent ‘Some Other Night’, French artist Draumr dips his paintbrush into various genres for a kaleidoscopic, boundary-breaking, undefinable sonic palette. The solo project of musician, producer and director Gabriel Cheurfa, listening to Draumr’s melodies is an immersive experience that is not only heard but felt. We came across the talented individual last year with his singles ‘Slowly Burning Feelings’ and ‘Some Other Night’, and each time we found ourselves lost in an astounding world of whimsy, mystery and profound depth. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Halcyon Slumber’.

Following ‘Some Other Night’, ‘Halcyon Slumber’ is Draumr’s first release in 2024 and another eccentric evolution of his sound. Leading to his highly anticipated upcoming album, the new single retains the synth-pop dreaminess of previous releases; however, a deeper veil of 80s synth-pop clings to Draumr’s contemporary blend of alternative pop. Connecting retro styles with refreshing modern-day tones, Draumr showcases the power of music to connect individuals and transcend generations.

A conceptual piece, Draumr’s new album “takes us on a voyage that emanates the warmth and stillness of an evanescent carefree summer…” and ‘Halcyon Slumber’ brings the ethereal whimsy of the summer. Synth-driven, ‘Halcyon Slumber’ is a swirl of electric tones with a strong beat piercing the tune; however, as bold and brash as the melody can be, its calming exuberance breaks through in the heartfelt twirl of harmonic rhythm.

One of the more daring aspects of ‘Halcyon Slumber’ is the incorporation of ethnic electronica amidst the dreamy pop ambience.  A deviation from his traditional sound, although Draumr is quite indefinable, ‘Halcyon Slumber’ draws together downtempo synth-pop with alternative pop in an experimental sonic melting pot.
