Downtown Patriots – Mother’s Arms (2025)

With a love of 90s rock, musician Danny Watts describes himself as “a rock man at heart heavily influenced by 90s grunge… but I have a passion for all styles of music…”; given this, it makes sense that the solo project Downtown Patriots delve into various genres, weave them together, and offer a kaleidoscopic tapestry with a bit of everything shining bright. Hailing from the UK, the multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter is turning heads with moving melodies and poetic lyricism. Join us as we take our first dip into his diverse discography with ‘Mother’s Arms’.

Following the well-received 2024 singles ‘Angels In The Snow’ and ‘No One Needs To Know’, ‘Mother’s Arms’ marks a pivotal point in Watts’ sonic journey. While tinges of folk-rock peep in the background, ‘Mother’s Arms’ brims with traditional folk and country sounds. Composed, performed and produced by Watts, a heavier acoustic approach exists shifting from his typical guitar-laden rock tracks. Hints of acoustic guitar meld with a ukelele, a mandolin and a shimmering piano rounding things off.

For me, ‘Mothers Arm’s’ is a nostalgic melody taking listeners back to the 60s and 70s folk era – particularly with the toe-tapping arrangement, infectious calm, and a desire to lose yourself in a haze of sound. Interestingly, just as the melody leans towards yesteryear, the poetic lyricism transcends a timeless theme – societal conflict and instability. Like the days of Woodstock, Watts brings the protest for peace to 2025. He explains, “’Mother’s Arms’ was written in the wake of conflicts around the world…”

Melodically and lyrically, ‘Mother’s Arms’ is a wash of poignancy, profoundness and resonates with audiences on a deeper level. The words are significant, but it is the execution that touches me on that deeper level. Watts’ rich, warm, powerful vocals seemingly embrace you in a gentle hug. Moreover, while the track might explore difficult content, there is a sense of empowerment, peace, and most of all, hope.
