Don’t Problem – CD’s Lament (2021)
If you are looking for music that can change how you view bands, Don’t Problem has just what you need. With their single ‘CD’s Lament’, they will start your journey of discovery and turn how you look at brass bands on its head. As a homage to Craig David, the band hits you with heavy funk and psychedelic sounds that show their love for all types of music.
The single came to life as a chord and melody idea inspired by garage music. Over a rehearsal, it starts to morph into something much bigger that captures what their upcoming album Liminality is all about. With some big band sounds with funk, jazz and hip-hop thrown in for good measure, the band will completely change what you think brass is able to do.
‘CD’s Lament’ has some traditional jazzy tones in the opening through the rolling beats and light bursts of horns. This gets a funkier vibe as more instruments make their way into the soundscape. Throughout the single, you get blasts of big brass band sounds with all the drama and theatrics this entails. After the funky tones hit, you are drawn into a jazzier tone that makes you want to move. The flow of the music at this point is a little reminiscent of Sadao Watanabe only with a full brass band and not just a saxophone.
Later in the track, things turn again for a deeper tone that has a smooth slide to it. The beats that come in after this have a really modern feeling to them as they draw on contemporary tones. The pace of the music picks up for a cinematic vibe that would not be amiss in older Bond movies. Through all of this, you are filled with an energetic vibe that is just a lot of fun to listen to.
Don’t Problem hit you with a blast of horns that really showcases the versatility of the instruments while filling you with fun vibes. The layers of music combine traditional big band brass with contemporary flows for a blended sound. With cinematic arrangements, your mind is filled with the lights of the band.
