Don’t Get Lemon – D.I.E.I.N.T.H.E.U.S.A. (2022)
Don’t Get Lemon first introduced us to their retro sound with their EP Forward Not Forgotten. Now, in the leadup to their debut full-length album, they invite us into their first ballad ‘D.I.E.I.N.T.H.E.U.S.A.’. Not only is this single their first ballad, it is also one of the most unique songs off their upcoming album bringing avant-garde electronic pop to post-punk and the retro sound the band is becoming known for.
Through the unique tones of the single, the band considers not wanting to die in the USA and a desire to get away only to feel trapped by the responsibilities of life. A single that anyone who has ever wanted to drop everything and leave can easily relate to, there is a yearning for escapism woven into each note. The accompanying music video brings the sentiment of the single to visual life.
‘D.I.E.I.N.T.H.E.U.S.A.’ softly opens with a gentle and almost ambient tone. As you float on the opening tones, you are suddenly dropped into the head-bopping beats and retro synths. There is a real 80s vibe to the music that laps over your sense like waves. The drums continue to lead you down the soundscape as the synths glitter in the higher levels. It is a compelling mixture of retro-pop and dream-pop tones that creates a rich sound. As the single progresses, new melodic elements enter to clank and twinkle in the higher levels. The unique flow is quite different to what the band has offered before but still carries something that is purely Don’t Get Lemon.
The vocals bring a touch of new wave to the single. There is a gentle echo to the vocals that reach out into the mists of the synths and envelopes you. As the performance closes in around you, the lyrics bring a yearning for escape to your soul. This is tempered with the knowledge that you can’t drop everything because of the responsibilities you carry. It creates a bittersweet feeling that settles in your chest. While slightly sad, the single does have you thinking about the dreams you have and what you would love to do in life if you could forget about everything tying you down.
