Dominik Matzka – Was ist dann los (2023)

With his classical piano training and love for cinematic sounds, singer-songwriter Dominik Matzka brings mysticism through the abstract in his magical melodies. Along with his musical project, Matzka is an award-winning film composer whose scores have been heard at film festivals across the globe. Barely 30, the German songster embraces the concept of freedom, joy and self-expression in his creative endeavours. This is my introduction to Dominik Matzka but he has already turned heads across the globe with his film scores and, since late-2022, his heartfelt singles. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Was ist dann los’.

On the heels of his debut EP Untersberg, Matzka adopts a mystical obscurity within a pool of old-school traditional Eastern sounds. Listening to ‘Was ist dann los’ is like swirling about in an eclectic sonic whirlpool becoming lost in the overwhelming movement. A mere mortal in a fluid state of flux losing yourself in the soul-stirring flurry of melodic emotion. Interestingly, while a movement toward madness is nigh, there is still a state of soothing calm belying the chaos.

Bold, brash and eclectic, Dominik Matzka shows his talent as a film composer. Inserting an orchestral element into ‘Was ist dann los’, there is a rush of emotion lifting your heart before carrying you down into the depths of its haunting vulnerability. Intensely intimate and evocative, you experience the rollercoaster ride of human relationships without leaving your seat. I find this intriguing as it fully expresses the message of ‘Was ist dann los’ in a cinematic way.

Inspired by a breakup with his former partner, Dominik Matzka captured the rush of hate and love in ‘Was ist dann los’. Yet, while this track certainly carries you through the dark and light of life, he also adopts a conceptual perspective on humanity. The idea of self-development from loss and clarity through desperate confusion, Matzka believes we can learn from every situation, and this is expressed in his creative wash of music.

“You can think of literally any problem as a chance to learn something. In fact, we need crisis and dark times to learn things we otherwise wouldn’t.” – Dominik Matzka
