Dom Clark Trio – Old Town Bells (2020)

Dom Clark Trio is taking a turn from their usual sound with their last single of 2020, ‘Old Town Bells’. Taking a look at birth, marriage and death, the mandolin-driven single is an acid folk wonder. While still tapping into the funky music that caught our attention with their previous releases, the single is a different type of listening experience.

To bring this trip to life, Dom Clark (vocals, guitar, trumpet, synths, glockenspiel) is joined by Conor Cotterill (mandolin) and Enmanuel Moreno (drums, percussion). The trio came together in 2017 and by the end of the year were playing at the O2 Academy Islington. The next phase of their success started in 2018 when they built their own studio. Since then, they have been capturing the ears and hearts of anyone listening.

‘Old Town Bells’ draws you in with a wonderful mandolin-driven opening. The melody has all these layers that tumble over each other and just make you smile when you listen to them. The shuffling tones and mandolin notes twirl through the soundscape laying a path for you to follow. There is something captivating about the music that you can’t help but get drawn into. As the song progresses, more layers are added to the melody giving it an amazing alt-folk edge that is so unlike other music you hear. There is a light funky undertone to the music that gives it a great forward momentum.

Clark’s vocals continue the folky vibe of the melody as he takes you through the story of the lyrics. The major events of life are poetically laid out in his performance. He infuses a range of emotions into his performance while linking everything back to those old town bells that ring for each event.
