Disco Mary – Disguised As A Party (2023)

Drawing together the musical talents of electropop artist charly haze (vocals), Kev Sherry (vocals), Michael Beattie (guitar), Nicole Gardner (bass), Rachel Grant (guitar and synths) and Roddy McCahon (drums), Disco Mary has been referred to as “lush and hypnotic…” (Earmilk), “Scottish indie pop sensations” (She Makes Music), and “rising stars” (BBC Radio Scotland). Known for energetic and engaging performances, both as individuals and as the group Disco Mary, the lads and ladies are garnering loyal followings on a local and international scale. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Disguised As A Party’.

Following their critically acclaimed track ‘Everything’s Normal, Everything’s OK’, Disco Mary blast into 2023 with their new single ‘Disguised As A Party’. Once again lending her distinctive vocals to the Disco Mary sound charley haze brings an electropop meets funk to ‘Disguised As A Party’. Alongside haze’s charming vocals, we have Kev Sherry from Attic Lights bringing a rich, broody, but warm quality to the single.

While the obscure vocal execution is definitive in the Disco Mary sound, it is not only this that makes the UK-based group larger than life. As with ‘Everything’s Normal, Everything’s OK’, ‘Disguised As A Party’ finds that line between funk and contemporary pop. Groovy vibes ooze from the dynamic guitars with the pounding drums enhancing the chilled-out, retro grooves of the song. Just as haze and Sherry have you singing along, the melody has you hitting that repeat button.

One aspect of ‘Disguised As A Party’ that I find intriguing is how the warm, laidback melody is interwoven with vulnerable, gritty lyricism. Kev Sherry explains that “’Disguised As A Party’ is about putting on a brave face when you’re having a rough time and how sometimes, against perceived wisdom, this can actually help you. Some days, you just gotta get up and deal with the world and show a bit of grit….The song, however, is also about the flip side of why we feel compelled to put on a happy face and the attendant social pressures of this social expectation to be happy…”
