Dioneesus – The Festival (2022)

The brainchild of singer-songwriter Dennis McGrath, Dioneesus is a music project that is near impossible to define. A quick glance at McGrath’s discography and you will discover shifts from hip hop to indie-rock with dashes of pop and alt-rock – experimental to say the least. Taking his moniker from the Greek God of ritual and ecstasy, Dionysus, the US-based artist has a way of fusing sounds to create a sense of sonic ecstasy. The latest addition to his critically acclaimed repertoire is the single ‘The Festival’.

On the heels of his track ‘The Bottle’, ‘The Festival’ has a roots-inspired style with a bold hip hop vocal execution. Not the greatest fan of hip hop, I was uncertain about what to expect; the thing is, while I’m not the biggest fan of this style Dioneesus’ sound could definitely make me a believer. With a tribal vibe throughout the melody, ‘The Festival’ is a toe-tapping, head-bopping track with groovy, earthy vibes.

One thing I find interesting about ‘The Festival’ is not the eclectic melody but how it is really what it says on the tin. Not one to be pigeonholed, there is no adequate description for the song; however, the lyrical content is rather straightforward speaking about being at a music festival. Touching on the experience of this event, Dioneesus not only tells us his tale but expertly embodies the emotions felt at festivals. Joy, excitement and unspeakable exhilaration come through in this intriguing song.
