Devynn Blythe – Rock Bottom (2021)

Born and raised in Seattle, Columbia-based Devynn Blythe holds true to her roots merging the Seattle grunge scene with contemporary pop rock. While she enjoyed music from a young age, Blythe only began creating music in 2017. Layering emotive lyrics over high-paced, hard-hitting melodies, her songwriting has been described as “fresh and familiar making it easy to connect” (according to her Spotify bio). The latest addition to her repertoire is the single ‘Rock Bottom’.

Following her debut single ‘Waiting’, Blythe has released her rock-inspired track ‘Rock Bottom’. Moving away from the folk-pop style of ‘Waiting’, she showcases her innovativeness with grunge meets indie-rock sophomore single. A collaborative effort between Blythe and Colombian-based producer Juan Ortiz, ‘Rock Bottom’ has an upbeat, buoyant and infectious song; however, it is the combination of melancholic lyricism in a jovial style that truly intrigues me.

Reminiscent of Paramore, ‘Rock Bottom’ has a poignancy portrayed in an uplifting sound. Combining the dynamic guitars with pounding drums, Blythe tosses you into a whirlpool with her kaleidoscopic soundscape. The joviality of the track makes one assume it is all “sunshine and roses”, but there is a nostalgic sadness sliding through the song. Touching on elements of heartbreak followed by the “all too common stage of convincing oneself that a casual encounter with an ex could be a good idea”, Blythe connects with many people on a deeper level. Using a personal narrative, Blythe’s rich vocals execute meaningful lyricism in an effortless way. Yet, while the song covers issues of confusion, pain and inner turmoil, there is a lingering sense of empowerment, insightfulness and acceptance.

What I truly adore about Blythe and her music is the hard rock female factor. Gritty and grungy, ‘Rock Bottom’ shows Blythe’s Courtney Love meets Hayley Williams attitude. This edginess is clearly expressed throughout her music and I believe she would be a feast for the eyes at a live performance. While the song is named ‘Rock Bottom’, Devynn Blythe is top drawer!

In addition to her single, Devynn Blythe released an official music video for ‘Rock Bottom’. You can view the video on her YouTube channel.
