Devine Lie – Indelible Stain (2022)
For almost two decades, alternative rock band Devine Lie have been sharing their insatiable sound with the masses. Based in Cape Town, South Africa and Barbados, Devine Lie draws together various cultures in a thought-provoking mixing pot of music. Not afraid to touch on provocative topics, there is a social commentary with personal narratives woven into the songs; however, it is the collaboration of contemporary and classic tones that pushes the edginess of the band. The latest addition from Devine Lie is the single ‘Indelible Stain’.
Passionate about the music industry and “creating a sound that listeners could relate to without being told how to feel”, Nigel Nicholls makes “interpretive pieces…transporting listeners to the realms of philosophy, self-examination, and the many faces of love, lust, commitment, and seduction.” The title track from Devine Lie’s latest album, ‘Indelible Stain’ alludes to the feelings of frustration, heartbreak, pain and desperate loss when dealing with difficult situations that linger in resentment and anger.
Collaborating with numerous artists throughout the years, Nicholls connects with vocalist Grant Tuffs on ‘Indelible Stain’. A nod to the alternative rock sound of the 1990s and early 2020s, there is a nostalgic flair to the single. Reminiscent of Three Days Grace and 3 Doors Town, an angsty vibe exists in the powerful rock arrangement. Pounding drums meld with dynamic guitars taking you on an aggressive journey; however, Tuffs’ vocals bring a sense of soft melancholy to the track.
This is my introduction to Devine Lie so I was unsure what to expect; I’m glad I decided to find out. Sincere, sentimental and honest, there is a brutal rawness to Devine Lie’s single ‘Indelible Stain’.
