Detention – Faded, Not Jaded (2022)

From their single ’56 Minutes’ in 2020 to the track ‘Not To Go’ in 2022, we at The Other Side Reviews have kept an eye on US-based group Detention. It always astounds me how teenage bands can often outperform some established artists, and Detention is definitely one of these bands. Described by Sinusoidal Music as high-energy and emotive, Elliot Carter (lead vocalist), Evan Cox (guitar), Fritz Dannemiller (bass) and Luke Konopka (drums) have that youthful exuberance in sophisticated melodies. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Faded, Not Jaded’.

Following their EP, The Patchwork EP, the lads and lady retain their signature pop-punk sound in ‘Faded, Not Jaded’. From almost the first chord, Detention sends your head reeling with the dynamic guitars and pounding drums. Interestingly enough, while the hard-hitting nature of the song sends you into a kaleidoscopic whirlpool of sound, there is a smooth flow beneath the arrangement. Yes, the instrumentation has a bit of a bold frenzy about it, but a harmony exists between all the elements – even with the insertion of metal/punk screams within the song.

One thing I really enjoy about Detention is their energy. Frenzied, chaotic and a bit mad, you could easily lose yourself in a head-spinning few minutes of music. Then again, the music is not “all over the place” but an organised chaos. As I said, Detention has a youthful exuberance coming through their pop-punk sound, but there is a maturity in the melody. A nostalgic throwback to early-2000 bands, such as Paramore, is easily heard; however, there is a distinctive edginess making Detention’s music purely Detention.
