Desert Life – I Don’t Wanna Know (2023)

After meeting at an open mic night in West Wales, singer-songwriter Chris Swales (vocals and guitar) began jamming with multi-instrumentalist Tom Jordan (guitar and trumpet) and they discovered a truly unique type of music. With their confident performances at The Swansea Fringe Festival to their debut single ‘Not My Girl’ aired on BBC Introducing Wales and being a regular feature on Radio Wigwam, Desert Life is making waves on the UK music scene. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘I Don’t Wanna Know’.

Following the 2019 single ‘No Colours’, ‘I Don’t Wanna Know’ is Desert Life’s first release in four years. Recorded with producer Nick Swannell at Studio 49, ‘I Don’t Wanna Know’ has a strong country sound with a slip of folk-rock woven into the sonic tapestry. Featuring Jon Graboff on pedal steel guitar, ‘I Don’t Know’ has a toe-tapping vibe, however, while there is mellifluous joviality in the song there is also a melancholic tone flowing through the country single.

Unafraid to capture the core of human relationships and emotions, ‘I Don’t Wanna Know’ explores human vulnerability with a charming melody. First the first note, the upbeat acoustic guitars take you along a tale of heartbreak and despair. When speaking about ‘I Don’t Wanna Know’, Chris Swales explains “…we hear the tale of how a man’s heart sank as he received word of his ex-girlfriend’s newfound love, and the pain of her moving on has pierced his soul like a jagged despair.”

Easily resonating with listeners on an intimate level, the powerful single can be a tribute to all those lonely hearts and jilted lovers finding it difficult to let go of love…and there are so many of them. Sophisticated and sincere but with a rugged grittiness to the track, Desert Life capture pain, turmoil and a gut-wrenching feeling of “oh, what the hell, why’d it have to go that way” in ‘I Don’t Wanna Know’.
