A multimedia artist, she brings a strong focus on storytelling to her music, then mixes it with her wide vocal range and unique delivery. Growing up surrounded by music, she learned operatic singing techniques from a young age. She combines this with self-taught instrumentation which resulted in her first self-produced album when she was in grade 10.
The EP opens with ‘Towers’ which sweeps you into the track with a movement that is like a wind moving over an open field. The electronic tones that take over sparkle against your ears and thump in your chest. Derosnec’s vocals grab your attention from the distance, like the call of a siren being carried on the wind of the music. When the guitars pulse over the melody they bring a flair of fire that leads you to the main vocal line. Her performance has a slightly gruff touch that is all alternative rock as she delves into the human condition. The chorus soars with a punch against the ivory towers of the world as she wraps a call to action into a shout that you can’t help but want to join.
‘Nighttime in the Desert’ has a groovier tone to the last track as the music creates the desert landscape covered in twilight. There is a completely different feeling to this track compared to the opening song, which really showcases the versatility of Derosnec’s sound. Through the music and vocals, you can easily see the endless expanse of the desert sands, lit only by bright moonlight. The vocal performance on this track is decadent as it beckons you close into an intimate embrace in the face of the vastness of the soundscape. Her performance gains power later in the track as her vocals layer over each other and builds higher and higher.
The electronic tones make a comeback in ‘Shepherds’, but with a really different vibe. There is a dark and ominous feeling to this track which is enhanced by the vocals. The rather dark wave touch of the vocals is bolstered by the almost spoken-word delivery. The drone in the lower levels of the track create a tension that is taken to another level by the story of the lyrics. The repetitive lyrics of the chorus will have you murmuring along, before the guitar bridge coils a spring of tension in your stomach. This tension is compounded by the vocals that turn into a melodic call after the steady darkness of the delivery leading up to this point.
‘Save Me’ combines head-bopping beats with lightly droning synths and rather easy guitars. It is an interesting blend of sounds that drop you into a space of wavering neon lights and wisps of black darkness. Her vocals bring a swirl of thoughts and emotions to the song that leads to a plea on the chorus. There is something really touching about this track that is extremely relatable as it asks for help. The music brings a touch of darkness that nips at your heels and threatens to drag you down, but this is tempered with the knowledge of the darkness and the understanding that you need to fight it. The chorus can easily send shivers racing down your spine with Derosnec’s performance.
The last original track on the EP is ‘Desire’ which pounds into your brain through the opening beats. The electronic pulses that rest on these beats bring a slightly retro tone to the track. The vocals are packed with storytelling lyrics that draw you into the picture they paint. There is a feeling of wanting to help someone who is going through something you have already experienced. This is contrasted by an undertone of knowledge that what you say won’t make a difference. Through the track, Derosnec tells two sides of a story that you can’t stop listening to. The movement of the melody enhances the experience of the lyrics and the powerful points of the story.
The EP comes to a close with the second version of ‘Nighttime in the Desert (Tehran)’ which offers a more organic feel to the track. The use of acoustic guitars brings a different feeling to the track and creates more poignant emotions. Derosnec’s vocals twirl with the organic instrumentation, like sparking embers rising from an open fire. It is a mesmerising and beautiful dance that brings the best elements of both together for an exquisite listening experience.
