Derek Lee Goodreid – Underdog (2023)

Blending elements of blues, rockabilly and country, Australian singer-songwriter Derek Lee Goodreid has established himself as an inimitable and insatiable force of music. At the age of 18, Goodreid “embarked on a journey with the guitar and it was in the realm of songwriting that he discovered his genuine passion…”, and it is this passion that flows through his melodies. Using personal narratives and intense intimacy in his songs, Derek Lee Goodreid can layer haunting melancholy with toe-tapping chilled vibes all in a few minutes. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Underdog’.

This is not our introduction to Derek Lee Goodreid but every song we hear is so intriguing that it feels like the first time we listen to him. On the heels of his well-received single ‘Lost & Alone Again’, Goodreid leans toward country music styles with a prominent bouncing banjo. Yet, while Brandon Fox’s banjo controls the melody’s jovial vibe, Stephen K Donnelly’s rhythmic bass merges with steady drums in the arrangement. Special mention needs to be made to guitarist Adrian Whyte for the powerful guitar solo in ‘Underdog’ bringing a blues-rock feel to the track.

Just as the instrumentation is bold with a soul-stirring tone, Goodreid’s vocals add ruggedness in a soulful way. As with ‘Lost & Alone Again’, there is a tinge of Nick Cave lurking in ‘Underdog’ adding a sinister melancholy within the haunting hazy soundscape. I find this intriguing as it evokes a heart-dropping sensation; however, the meaning behind the song is far from an eerie otherworldliness. Goodreid explains that ‘Underdog’ “shines a powerful light on the resilience of the human spirit delivering a poignant message of hope and perseverance…”

Rich, sincere and able to sliver beneath your skin giving you chills all over, Derek Lee Goodreid releases his new single ‘Underdog’.
