Derek Corr – If I Was The Devil (2020)

Derek Corr is an Irish musician who comes from a family with a long musical tradition. He formed his first band at 16-year-old and they were soon regularly taking to the stage. Over the years, he has worked as a session musician and producer but moved to releasing his own music. ‘If I Was The Devil’ is the first single from his solo album This Now.

The track showcases his love of music and fuses with Buddhist meditation and philosophy. The goal of all his music is to express the power and essential nature of our being.

‘If I Was The Devil’ has a simple opening that gently grabs your attention. The melody picks up slightly but continues to carry the minimalist tone. It is a great combination of both indie pop-rock and acoustic tones that push through the meditative focus of Corr’s music.

While the melody forms the perfect foundation for the track, it is the lyrics that really get you. They make you pause to think about the message of the track. Corr’s vocal delivery is steady and gently rubs against your ears. His delivery drives the lyrics of the song home and makes you really listen.

Derek Corr takes a look at the essential nature of humans and the negativity of the world in ‘If I Was The Devil’. He uses a steady and captivating melody to highlight his sometimes philosophical lyrics. If you are looking for a pleasant track that gets you thinking about the world, this is the one for you.
