Dear Amber – Appear To Disappear (2023)

Proving that alternative rock is more alive than ever in the Danish music scene, foursome Dear Amber brings a contemporary lilt to the 90s rock sound. Formed in 2019 by Ronni Jørgensen (vocals and guitar), Morten Leidecker (guitar), Kenneth Juul Larsen (bass) and Jan Ettrup-Mikkelsen (drums), Dear Amber has tinges of Three Days Grace, Seether and Shinedown in their music. This is my introduction to Dear Amber, but the lads are already turning heads on It’s All Indie, Nordic Music Central, Thoughts Words Actions, and music podcast thebuzzer podcast. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Appear To Disappear’.

Following their well-received single ‘Roadkill’, ‘Appear To Disappear’ is a “powerful, high-energy, straightforward rock banger that is guaranteed to get you pumped up…” – their words, not mine, although I entirely agree with it. The second track from their upcoming album Echoes Always Fade, Dear Amber fuses elements of grunge, alternative rock and hard rock in ‘Appear To Disappear’. As with ‘Roadkill’, the new single showcases an evolution in their sound bringing a harder, heavier tone as compared to the well-received debut album Sparks Equal Fall (released in 2021).

One aspect of Dear Amber’s music is the harmonic but simultaneously distorted arrangement. In ‘Appear To Disappear’, the dynamic guitars meld with the pounding drums; however, prominence is given to all the instrumentation making everything stand out waiting to be heard – then it all comes together in a beautiful whole. Add Jørgensen’s gruff vocals and you have a rough, gritty, but also warm and bold single.

Familiar but fresh. Rough but warm. Soothing but gritty. Gentle but harsh. Intimate but abrupt. It seems Dear Amber takes all your emotions, rattles them about, sends chills down your spine and leaves you gasping for more. Based on ‘Appear To Disappear’, I hope these Danish rockers are appearing not to disappear but to remain.
