DD Allen – I See You In The Dark (2020)

There are times when you have to part ways with someone you love, but there is always a hope that they will return. These moments are captured by DD Allen in his single ‘I See You In The Dark’. While an introspective track, there is an ambiguity to the lyricism that allows your imagination to run wild.

Drawing on guitar-driven rock-pop, Allen is joined by his band for this look at the thoughts that run through your head in the dark. The band includes Charlie Everett (guitar), Alex Reed (bass), Will Sear (Keys) and Rich Walker (drums). The band has been together since 2015 with a few line-up changes over the years. Now they are here to get you grooving to their 80s-tinged sound.

‘I See You in the Dark’ shimmers into existence with a pop-rock tone wrapped around shining synths. There is a light influence of 80s synth resting in the lower levels of the melody, but this is overcome by a more contemporary tone. Woven into the shimmering tones of the melody is a hint of longing that comes through on the guitar lines. The beats resting in the base of the music have a good flow that makes your head move to them. The music picks up for the chorus allowing your imagination to run wild. Later in the track is this clap before the melody drops to a flow that is almost like that moment when you float between awake and asleep.

Over this moving melody is Allen’s vocals which continue the pop-rock vibes. There is an engaging energy to his performance that draws you into the track. Through his performance, you are encouraged to give in to your wildest imaginations. There is an ambiguity to the lyrics that add to the imaginative haze of the song while keeping you on the route Allen wants you to meander down.

DD Allen gets you moving to the pop-rock groove of ‘I See You in the Dark’ while letting your imagination go wild. The melody has a hint of 80s synths, but this gives way to more pop-rock sensibilities. Allen’s performance is smooth and draws you into the twirling twilight of the single and the introspection of the lyrics.
