The Other Side Reviewstrack of the day

Track of the Day: Daze – yourself

Indie-pop duo Daze blossom onto the 2020 Spring music scene with a colourful and enigmatic new single called ‘yourself’. The latest release from the two-piece from Oxford is a fitting start to the season as the country awakens from a long and dark winter slumber and the sun melts the frozen pockets of our souls. Daze’s song ‘yourself’ sounds like the comforting arms of the sun on a day still cold enough to see snow.  Its warm vibe and fuzzy beats welcome you into the band’s dreamy world, or more specifically their bedroom where their pop tunes are created. The band’s brand of dreamy bedroom-pop is unmistakably and undoubtedly inspired by the likes of Blossoms, Clairo and girl in red.

The tune’s lyrics, delivered as soft, saccharine and lethargic musings, are subtly less carefree than the rest of the song, hidden like sincere little gems among sonic bursts of spring.  One half of the Oxford duo sings, “I haven’t seen your colours lately, I haven’t seen you acting yourself” and calls on whoever’s listening to “think of yourself”, later asking “why are you crying”. The words highlight important themes of mental health and self-care, clearly significant to a band that raised money via their first lockdown EP for the mental health charity Mind.

Still the lyrics leave much to the imagination in terms of any crystalline or set in stone meaning behind the song. There is beauty in allowing room for interpretation, a little mystery lets the listener get swept up by the tune’s overarching effervescent feeling and jubilant mood. Some of the happy-go-lucky and carefree melodic elements of the track remind me of Cardigan’s classic ‘Love Fool’ – which is always a good thing. The song is pleasure meets ears and every listen should come with the instruction: LEAVE ON REPEAT.
