Track of the Day: daze – favourite mistake

Bedroom-pop anyone? Sure, if it has a good melody (in most cases) and some mellifluous vocals (usually). Yet the problem can arise with the too casual attitude or in quite a few cases, well, bedroom production – that would usually sound like the song or songs was recorded in the restroom, not even a bedroom. So, how do you come up with a good melody and vocals, at least decent production, and still record the whole shebang in your bedroom? daze, a two-piece indie-pop band from Oxford seems to be heading toward a solution to that problem with their most recent single ‘favourite mistake.’ The duo met in college, was formed in 2017 and decided, as they put it, to “produce dreamy pop tunes from our bedroom” and that is exactly what they are doing on their ‘ favourite mistake.’

Artists that go the pop way (bedroom and otherwise) usually make one mistake: they keep pumping out release after release, and very often it is the quality of those that suffer. daze seems to take another approach. They are pacing themselves, trying to make sure that every single release is crafted with care. No wonder they were able to raise money for Mind charity in 2020 with their ‘lockdown EP’.

Yet, there seem to be no mistakes on ‘favourite mistake’ single, favourite or otherwise. The duo retains all the qualities of good bedroom-pop – a very good melody and songwriting, some good vocal lines, and the production is up to a level beyond the bedroom. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the duo actually studied music production. In this case, Fleetwood Mac is at their pop best. Not a bad choice. If daze continues in this manner, they’ll certainly be able to raise more money, not only for charity.
