DayEyez – Cast Away (2025)
A pioneer in embracing AI-generated content and production with conventional – for lack of a better word – music composition, singer-songwriter DayEyez opens our eyes to a new world of music. The brainchild of independent artist Shaun Dayman, DayEyez not only seeks the power of futuristic AI in his melodies but draws together a blend of vintage and contemporary alternative rock. Since his 2024 debut single, ‘Bubblegum Pop’, the New Zealand-based artist has turned heads internationally quickly gaining a loyal following. Today, we gander at his most recent release, ‘Cast Away’.
Following his well-received single, ‘Insecurities’, DayEyez takes another step into 2025 with ‘Cast Away’. Self-penned, recorded, composed and produced, the track oozes with DIY passion – not that working with producers is anything less than passionate. A few decades ago, a DIY approach tended to broach ruggedness, rawness, and that analogue grittiness so associated with punk music. Nowadays, completely solo is so much easier using software and, more recently, AI; DayEyez drags us along to showcase the power of new-age music creation.
Sophisticated and mature, ‘Cast Away’ blends pulsating drums, soaring guitars, and a shimmer of keys in an elegant sonic wrapper. Then again, while the track exudes professionalism, there is an inextricable vulnerability, fragility, and heart-breaking tragedy lingering in the melody.
For me, listening to ‘Cast Away’ is more than merely a stirring wash of emotional alternative rock; its vibrancy is immersive with palpable desperation. Tossing you into a sonic whirlpool, each instrument adds a slice of light in what is a mire of doom – like the anime whirlwinds where that gritty dark stuff clings to you. Interestingly, while ‘Cast Away’ is a trudge through the tumultuousness of humanity, DayEyez’s bold vocals act like an anchor holding you close with rich warmth.
“’Cast Away’ explores the emotional aftermath of regret and self-inflicted loss. With heartfelt lyrics like, “Now I’m stranded on the edge of your world, a cast away from the life we unfurled”, the track channels the raw intensity of Imagine Dragons and the anthemic power of Thirty Seconds to Mars.” – DayEyez on ‘Cast Away’
