Dawn Somek – Revolving Doors (2021)

Reminiscent of pop superstar Christina Aguilera, Dawn Somek can captivate your senses and leave you awestruck with her powerful music. Listening to rock, pop and soul as a child, Somek brings old-school sounds to the 21st century with a contemporary genre-defying style. Featured by Talk about Pop Music, Indie Pong, Fruit Sonic and several online playlists, Somek is turning heads across the globe. The latest addition to her critically acclaimed discography is ‘Revolving Doors’.

Following her slower, acoustic ballad ‘One Day’, ‘Revolving Doors’ is an upbeat, buoyant and highly infectious pop tune. Clever use of electronic instrumentation, ‘Revolving Doors’ is a swirl of synths, beatbox and keys creating a hazy ambience. Elegantly traversing changes in pace and tone, Somek crescendos into catchy choruses while falling back down into smooth, jovial verses. While the ebb and flow design is evocative, it is the aligned concept that shows Somek’s depth.

Touching on toxic relationships, frustration, fear and inner turmoil, ‘Revolving Doors’ has a poetic complexity. Yet, the distressing issues are not what stands at the forefront of the track. With her rich, bold and strong vocals, Somek brings feelings of self-empowerment, optimism and hopefulness to ‘Revolving Doors’ showcasing a joy in change – “revolving doors” so to say.

The track may have electronic instrumentation, but the clarity of her powerful vocals adds an organic element. What I find particularly intriguing is the acoustic outro without any instrumentation, merely Somek’s harmonic voice. This change in pace may be small but it has a huge impact incorporating a simplistic charm to ‘Revolving Doors’.

Dawn Somek may be a new artist, but her depth, poignancy and soulfulness say that she will soon be alongside Christina Aguilera and Demi Lovato.
