Dawn Boudreau – Every Winding Mile (2023)
Drawing together elements of jazz, folk and pop in her melodies, Canadian artist Dawn Boudreau is described as a “jazzy folk musician”. In her own words, Boudreau “writes songs from a woman’s heart. Sometimes these stories are amusing and sometimes they’re heart-breaking…” – a sentiment that is easily felt in her elegant tunes. Hailing from the ultra-rural riverside community of Penny, there is a raw desperation and intimacy to Boudreau; however, there is also a flighty wistfulness oozing into your soul through each chord. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Every Winding Mile’.
Following her single ‘Ready For A New Year’ in 2020, ‘Every Winding Mile’ is Dawn Boudreau’s first release in three years. A collaboration with various musicians, including Derek Maroney (upright bass), Emily Von Hausen (harp), Alison Jenkins (accordion), and Katie Stewart (violin), ‘Every Winding Mile’ is easily described as elegantly eclectic. Beautifully arranged, Boudreau’s new song is a sophisticated symphony harmonically blending the various instruments. Yet, while the various elements come together in a delicate balance, each of the instruments exists within an individual bubble of sound giving everyone time to shine but simultaneously building each other up.
Softer, gentler and more soothing than her previous tracks ‘Ready For A New Year’ and ‘Oh F**k’, ‘Every Winding Mile’ is a refreshing melody for anyone to adore. One aspect I find appealing is how a simplicity flows through the track but is embraced by its kaleidoscopic arrangement. It makes sense considering the raw theme behind ‘Every Winding Road’ is both intricate and simple. Boudreau explains that “this is a love song for the road trip between Prince George and Vancouver, BC. Either end of this journey has loved ones waiting at the end…although floods and fire have changed the landscape of the journey, every bit of it holds memories…”
