Davie Furey – Christmas Eve (2024)
Traipsing from folk to indie-pop, soft rock to the blues, singer-songwriter Davie Furey is not one to be pigeon-holed. With an enigmatic spirit and innovative rigour, the Ireland-based musician delicately weaves powerful messages into moving melodies, and we’ve enjoyed as much of his stuff as we can. From the 2022 ‘Downtown Parade’, everyone at The Other Side Reviews has been astounded with each Furey offering – and it’s not always that easy to remain fresh in our minds. Today, we take a listen to his latest single, ‘Christmas Eve’.
Following the well-received album Glimpses of the Truth, Davie Furey ends the year with his charity single, ‘Christmas Eve’. Recorded at Jealoustown Studios with producer Stuart Gray, the single wraps traditional Irish folk with a soft indie-rock wrapper. Upon first listen, a nostalgic whisper of The Pogues exists, mostly due to Furey’s gritty vocals with an Irish-accented lilt clinging to the tones. Interestingly, while the melody is haunting featuring Furey on an acoustic guitar, Stuart Gray on keys and guitar, and Michael Kerr’s eerie fiddle, there is also a sense of calm peeking in the mellifluous tune. This is particularly intriguing as it captures the theme of ‘Christmas Eve’ perfectly – acknowledging the joy of this season but recognising the despair that exists.
For some, Christmas celebrations raise memories of excited families coming together for a massive lunch, laughs, giggles, and just merry Yuletide fun; however, this isn’t reality for others. No presents, no grinning family, no hot chocolate before a roaring fire, Christmas is merely more time dealing with the trials of life. Fortunately, there are support systems to help people facing homelessness and much more during the holidays, such as The Simon Communities of Ireland – a network of independent communities that provide housing and treatment for people facing homelessness. Partnering with Davie Furey, all proceeds of ‘Christmas Eve’ will be donated to The Simon Communities of Ireland raising much-needed funds and awareness.
“I’ve written a couple of Christmas-themed songs over the years but have never released any of them or included them on my albums… For me, this is a song of reflection and gratitude, whilst also being aware that this time of year can be very difficult for people…” – Davie Furey on ‘Christmas Eve’
