Dave Mohan – Somewhere Beyond The Blue (2023)

As a classically trained musician specialising in the Baroque harpsichord, UK-based Dave Mohan has the structure of a classical artist; however, he merges his background with the contemporary stylings of various genres taking his sound to another level. Last year we reviewed his single ‘Arioso In Red’ as Mohan fused elements of symphonic orchestra with jazz undertones. Since that 2022 release, he has entranced international audiences with ‘Shadows In The Fire’, ‘For Polina: Till Tears Run Dry’, and ‘Lightning on Galatea’ – each adding a new layer to Mohan’s eclectic musical blend. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Somewhere Beyond The Blue’.

Following the 2023 single ‘Lightning on Galatea’, ‘Somewhere Beyond The Blue’ finds a line between jazz and pop in its classical ball of sound. Created at Abbey Road Studios with Simon Gibson, the heart-melting single sends chills down your spine with its orchestral composition and soothing tone; however, the punch of sweet jazz lurks beneath the surface. Combined with the mellifluous vocals of Carolina de la Muella, Mohan’s elegant piano and subtle weaving of solo cello puts a listener’s soul at rest in its kaleidoscopic cacophony. Interestingly, while there is a gentle soothing to ‘Somewhere Beyond The Blue’, its theme is less charming.

Inspired by life in its totality, Dave Mohan’s music is driven by a wider social conscience and insightful understanding. In this world of chaos, uncertainty and despair, ‘Somewhere Beyond The Blue’ is a serenade of grief, pain and heartbreaking aggravation. I am pleased to say reality is not all tragedy and ‘Somewhere Beyond The Blue’ exudes sympathy, compassion and humanity in its mystical tones.  Dave Mohan explains:

“Sometimes we lose those we’ve loved the most… it’s beyond painful to witness the scenes of grief and loss countless others are experiencing in our world in wars, seemingly, without end. Where the powerless always suffer the most… in the hope that one grief observed, though only a drop in the ocean, can add something to the pool of human sympathy at a time when it’s so sorely needed – a song of farewell.”

In addition to the single, Dave Mohan released a lyric video for ‘Somewhere Beyond The Blue’. You can view it below or via Mohan’s YouTube channel.
