Dave Belding – Purge and Flourish (2023)
Inspired by the likes of Korn, Soundgarden, Thrice and Tool, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Dave Belding has, needless to say, a hard-hitting sound. Filled with a distorted atmospheric tone, Belding tries to keep each note in its place but still making the music unpredictable. Finding his passion for music at a young age with a guitar in his hand, the US-based artist is unique to say the least. This is my introduction to Dave Belding, but he is already turning heads with features on Roadie Metal and Rock Noticias – to name a couple. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Purge and Flourish’.
On the heels of his track ‘Arthur Williams’, Dave Belding moves from scorching sounds to a dreamier, ethereal tone in ‘Purge and Flourish’. The thing is, while there is a hazy ambience in ‘Purge and Flourish’ that fills your head with an intoxicating sonic incense, there is still a slight scorching within the melody. Placing you beneath a psychedelic blanket, the rolling guitars meet soft keys and steady drums. However, that breath of hard rock chaos bursts through every now and then with a crashing cymbal, hard-hitting guitar riff and powerful grit in Belding’s vocals.
Just as the melody is intriguing, confusing and a kaleidoscopic whirl pushing you in a thought-provoking way, the theme of ‘Purge and Flourish’ is as intense.
“It’s about self-reflection and finding strength to continue changing one’s character. I’ve made mistakes in life I can’t take back. I learned all my lessons the hard way because I’m stubborn. It’s about realising I’m in a better place now, but I’m not sure if I strayed off the right path. I’ve become wiser as I’ve grown in life, but I still question why I make decisions I know are reckless…this is definitely an introspective look into myself.” – Dave Belding on ‘Purge and Flourish’
Elegantly capturing the overflowing weight of life with a blast of insight breaking through this sonic blanket, ‘Purge and Flourish’ is emotive without being overwhelming.
