Darwin & The Finches – Lover (2021)

The mixed emotions that a lot of us are encountering can fog our vision. Darwin & The Finches are looking to clear the mists and open our eyes with their single ‘Lover’. Through the poetic lyrics, the track has us turning our gaze inwards to consider how powerful our position is if we avoid distractions. It also dares us to believe that we are the ones who hold the keys to everything.

The three-piece Blackpool-based band uses their signature honesty to create an eye-opening introspection. Filled with purpose and a love for what they do, their music is for the unrepresented. Using their rock sound, they help you grow, be honest with yourself and see the truth in all things.

‘Lover’ sends you flying from the first guitar line with an almost cinematic opening. There is an expansive feeling to the music like you are flying through the air with the wind whipping around you and the ground flashing by. The rolling drums combine with the guitar line and the female vocals to put you on the band’s frequency. The flying sensation created by the opening melody remains for the entire track keeping you soaring even as the lyrics swirl around your head.

The vocals have an anthemic feeling to them as they surround you. There is a slight edge of echo to the vocal performance which enhancing the flying feeling of the music. This also makes the poetic lyrics hit a bit harder as they filter into your brain. The lyrics really make you think about what is happening around you and how you could change this.

Darwin & The Finches open your eyes and shift the fog of mixed emotions through the rock sounds of ‘Lover’. The soaring melody has you flying to its cinematic tones only to be enveloped by the anthemic vocals. While the lyrics are poetic, they are also relatable and thought-provoking.
