Danny B the Airhead – Start Again (2022)
With his single ‘Start Again’, Danny B the Airhead makes you want to dance to the rhythm while crying a little inside. Playing RnB and rap against Afrobeat and dance, he dives into the story of someone who acknowledges that they were in the wrong and causing a mess in their relationship. As the single leads you to the understanding that the main character wants to do anything to fix things, it tempers this desire with the knowledge that you might go too far when attempting this.
An interesting take on a love song, the track offers a fresh first-person perspective which is new to Danny’s sound. A multi-instrumentalist, rapper and singer, Danny started writing songs at 14 and learnt how to produce when he discovered Logic at 16. He hasn’t looked back since and keeps moving forward with engaging self-produced tracks that showcase his evolution as an artist.
There is a wonderful blend of RnB and light dance that opens ‘Start Again’. The shuffle of the beats sinks into your shoulders, getting them to bop to the rhythm, while the accompanying beat has your foot tapping. The music creates a wonderful base filled with dancing movement that gets your body moving to the rhythm. It is impossible to listen to this melody and stay still. While the melody is relatively understated, there is a power in each note that hooks you to the single. There are some lighter tones that warble through the higher levels of the track, adding more textures to the melody and creating a slide of RnB against the more Afrobeat base. The piano that enters in the latter parts of the melody brings a new hit of emotion.
As you are bopping around to the melody, it is Danny’s vocals that really give the track its flow. Through his melodic rap, he tugs at your emotions while picking up some of the dancing energy of the melody. The overall flow of the single is rather upbeat with a pinch of summer heat that makes you dance and sink into the warmth. This is tempered by the lyrics that tell a much sadder tale, bringing a delightful contrast of feelings. Through the lyrics, Danny offers the acknowledgement of having done something wrong in a relationship, that turns into a plea for a second chance. There is an offer of change that really tugs at your emotions before you hit the catchy chorus that you might find yourself singing at random times throughout the day.
Using upbeat melodics and sadder lyrics, Danny B the Airhead brings a delightful contrast of heartbreak and warm dance vibes to ‘Start Again’. The melody has a rather understated feeling that allows the flow of Danny’s melodic rap to really set the pace of the single. Through the lyrics, he tugs at your emotions before getting the catchy chorus stuck in your head.
