Daniel Bohn – Alone (2022)

In our interview with Daniel Bohn last year, singer-songwriter Daniel Bohn shared that his “biggest influence would be other bands…dialling in and connecting with the music is powerful”, and this connection is truly evident in his engaging melodies. Along with features on The Other Side Reviews, other notable press has been singing his praises such as Sinusoidal Music, Rising Artists Blog, Rock Era Magazine, Red Rock Magazine and many more. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Alone’.

Following his well-received single ‘Divinity’ which “mixes electronic elements, dark brutal riffs, and fluid melodies…” (Rock Era Magazine), Bohn adopts an alternative rock sound tinged with melodic metal and the synths of post-punk. A nostalgic flair takes listeners away on a journey to the sounds of the 90s; however, a modern-day rock sound is woven throughout the single adding a contemporary edginess. As with ‘Divinity’, there are brutal riffs within a fluid melody, but ‘Alone’ highlights Bohn’s brashness with smoothness in the single.

Opening with soft, soothing instrumentation and vocals, ‘Alone’ sets you off on a glistening sonic river. The thing is, while a sense of soothing remains throughout the single, a grittiness and harsh haunting sound emerge as the song progresses – perhaps Bohn showing you the tumultuous waves beneath the glittering river’s surface.

Recorded by Daniel Bohn in his native sound of St. Louis, ‘Alone’ is a song expressing the fragility, vulnerability and desperate inner turmoil of mental illness. Bohn explains that “the idea behind the project is to symbolise one’s mental illness, such as anxiety and depression and place it inside a fantasy-like universe.” The depth and grittiness of ‘Alone’ certainly have us staring at the darkness of depression and hoping to make it to the other side of the proverbial tunnel.
