DanFromUpstairs – Love (2024)
Comparisons in today’s music world are all too rife with new acts described as a melding of Nirvana and Hanson or Joy Division and Taylor Swift; DanFromUpstairs isn’t the lovechild of anyone. Sauntering across the field of styles with a pair of scissors in one hand and basket in the other, UK-based DanFromUpstairs creates sonic bouquets with shimmering funk roses, blues-rock orchids, pop tulips and electronic beats glittering in the crystal vase. Pushing the boundaries of musical conventionalism, DanFromUpstairs presents innovative originality with his eclectic bouquets.
Following his critically acclaimed single ‘Cupid’s Error’ – a funk-tinged twirl of pop-rock music – DanFromUpstairs embraces a heavier rock tone in the new track ‘Love’. While bold beats drive the tune like a heartbeat, twinkling synths peek into the kaleidoscopic tune but, it is the scorching hard rock guitar that stands out hitting you between the eyes. As the song progresses, a stream of keyboards quietly overcomes the arrangement pulsating to the end.
For me, the song is a melodic tale of the theme – a cynical disinterest to being in love. The beats are a pulsating heart, steady and firm, clearly portraying the protagonist’s opinion on romance, kind of like Sheldon Cooper’s blunt response to life. Focused on self-preservation and above the triviality of love, his steadiness lies with barebones finality. Yet, the rush of guitar acts as a possible hit of emotion with the idea of blissful love; it is stamped out as the keyboard comes to a “404 error” beat.
The melody is intriguing and a rush of music whips past your face however, the vocal execution of brash words adds humanity to the music. Rich and bold, Luke Matthews’ voice is inviting, although the full-bodied weightiness of the vocals is held by an invisible veil. Alluring in its charm and warmth, you feel welcomed; then again, obvious cracks display the “jaded and bitter nature” – best leave this one alone.
In addition to the single, DanFromUpstairs released an official music video for ‘Love’. You can view the video below or on his YouTube channel.
