Dana Schindel – Keep Moving Forward (2023)
Inspired by life in its entirety, singer-songwriter Dana Schindel has been writing songs as a soundtrack to her life. From celebrating a night out to dealing with heartache and learning a new skill, Schindel finds courage and solace in new songs. Known for her engaging and evocative performances, the Vancouver country-pop artist has performed as halftime entertainment singing national anthems, as well as playing alongside legends Jim Hibbard and Max Reimer. While she is a well-known name in North America, her following is growing on a global scale with features on Tinnitist, Find No Enemy, Out Loud Culture, and many other playlists. Influenced greatly by the likes of Bette Midler, Barbara Streisand, Alanis Morrissette, Dolly Barton and Cher, Dana Schindel is carving her own path just like these fantastic female artists. In ‘Keep Moving Forward’, Schindel draws on her inner Shania Twain with a bold country tone but inserts a pop sentimentality reminiscent of Desree. Simplistic and minimalist, ‘Keep Moving Forward’ is a charming but heart-breaking tune. What I find intriguing is not only the flow and soothing sensation of the song but how its innocent naivety is both melancholic and empowering.
As I mentioned, Dana Schindel sings life soundtracks and her decision to release original music came from a pivotal experience – the death of her father. In ‘Keep Moving Forward’ she pours forth the painful fragility felt, but also adds poignant lyricism with an upbeat nature. Dana Schindel explains that the track is “about a real conversation I had with my dad at a time when I was feeling really stuck in my life. I was on the road presenting at college nights across British Columbia and I was tired…I just wanted to go home. Some of the best lessons my dad ever taught me were on that phone call: even if I’m not feeling my best, I can still help another person…the lessons I am learning now will become the building blocks of my life, even if I can’t see it yet.”
