Dana Luna – The End (2024)

With a lingering pop-punk sound, singer-songwriter Dana Luna is a popular figure in that scene; however, Luna isn’t entirely stuck to pop-punk as she saunters across various genres with a cheeky grin. Her eclectic nature shouts diversity as Luna builds a sort of signature sound in its experimental obscurity. We came across the UK-based artist a couple of months ago with ‘Train Delay’ and noted Luna as “highly recommended”. As her discography grows with new single ‘The End’, she is no longer recommended but an absolute must-hear.

Following her single ‘Train Delay’, the Manchester songstress adopted an indie-pop meets jazz tune; however, she brushes everything aside wiping the slate clean for something completely, unfathomably, indescribably eclectic. A shrug of pop-punk badass-ness flits through ‘The End’ with tinges of hard rock interspersed. Then again, while one hand leans toward the heavier rock-inspired tones, the other leans toward pop-tinged indie-pop, power-pop, and even some clicks of electropop. Yet, each style and sound twirls about in an avant-garde sonic pool highlighting Luna’s obscurity and oddness.

Despite being somewhat discomforting in its unconventional tone, there is a sneaky cohesion within the chaos. ‘The End’ might be a bit all over the place with Luna’s vocals slithering through in their eerie way; however, that thread of unity remains in place. Perhaps it’s just some fun with a bunch of genres knocking about. Then again, it perfectly captures the darkness and creepiness, but perfectly logical even with its dramatic twist. Dana Luna explains:

“’The End’ explores the allure of a seemingly perfect partner – handsome, charming, and rich – who hides a darker reality of dependence, irresponsibility and infidelity. The powerful protagonist confronts her disillusionment leading to a dramatic climax… as his true nature emerges, she becomes enraged. In a dramatic turn, she binds him in a hotel room, taunting him with a knife and demanding he confront reality instead of living off daddy’s credit card.”
