Dan McCabe – Pieces (Love Or War) (2024)
Infectious, engaging, electrifying and soul-stirring – just a few ways of describing singer-songwriter Dan McCabe. His discography may reach back a single year (according to Spotify), but his impact on international audiences seems as if he has been sharing music with the masses for several decades. Raised in a musical family, McCabe was surrounded by music his entire life; it is this natural understanding that burns in his unique fiery passion for sound with sophisticated rawness. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Pieces (Love Or War)’.
Following his well-received full-length album Back To Life, McCabe blends several flecks of folk in a web of indie-rock, but with an alternative rock lilt to the Irish ballad. Joined by Kyle Farrell (guitars), Conal Early (keyboards and guitar), and Seamus Brett (keyboard), ‘Pieces (Love Or War)’ leans toward the heavier side of rock music; however, a soothing charm exists in the rush of guitar, piano, drums and bass. It’s this duality in style that I find intriguing – rough and gritty interwoven with a confident charm and calming tenderness.
Produced by Conal Early and Seamus Brett, with mixing by Ger McDonnell, ‘Pieces (Love Or War)’ is a melodic sensation. An immersive experience, McCabe and his crew send you off on a glistening sonic river staring out onto a glassy surface. Yet, just as there is a comforting elegance to the scenery, McCabe’s rough vocals twirl about with the tumultuous waves below the surface.
Delving into the complexities of human relationships, the instrumentation captures its intricacies in the music – a perfect alignment of theme and sound. A single “written about the emotional tug-of-war that defines human relationships… it is a powerful anthem for anyone who has wrestled with the dualities of love and loss.”
Sincere, sentimental and honest with tragic tenderness lingering in the profound lyricism, Dan McCabe’s ‘Pieces (Love Or War)’ makes one cry, hope, smile and despair all in a few minutes. I cannot wait for more from this masterful artist.
