Track of the Day: Damn Renegades – Conscience

Inspired by the likes of Nirvana, The Beatles, Megadeth and Black Sabbath, US-based group Damn Renegades draw together sounds of different eras and genres. Dipping into the sounds of the 60s with 70s rock and 90s grunge, Ryan Gattini (lead vocals and lead guitar), Dillon Finn (lead vocals and bass), Vinnie Muckey (drums and percussion) are definitely one of the more eclectic groups to cross my virtual desk. Featured on Less Than 1000 Followers, Sinusoidal Music, News Break, Rock Era Magazine, Motion News and various playlists, Damn Renegades are reaching audiences on an international level. One of their more recent releases is the single ‘Conscience’.

Following their three-track EP Caravan (released in February 2021), ‘Conscience’ blends elements of punk and metal throughout the high-paced single. If you think there is a lead-up to catchy verses within the powerful song, you are horribly mistaken. There are impressive lead guitar riffs with well-placed crescendos to infectious vocals, but Damn Renegades blast their energetic music into your headphones from the first second. I seriously mean the first second – no time to catch your breath, but honestly, this brashness is what makes ‘Conscience’ so exciting.

A guitar-driven single including shredding solos that will have you playing air guitar in front of your mirror (I mean, we can all be Tony Iommi if we want), ‘Conscience’ has a hard-hitting quality to the melody. Yet, while the tune does bounce about in your brain before reverbing down your spine, it is the lyricism that adds true depth. The band explain that this single is “about seeing your older self in current time and almost having a cathartic experience about it” – truly moving as it was penned during the Covid pandemic peak.

Easily described using the three As: abrupt, addictive and awesome, ‘Conscience’ is a refreshing blast of contemporary meets old-school hard rock. Damn Renegades is definitely a group to watch this year with their earworm songs.

In addition to the single, Damn Renegades released an official music video for ‘Conscience’. You can view it below or via their YouTube Channel.
