DAMIEN – Hurts (2023)
Establishing himself as one of the more distinctive, obscure artists we have come across, singer-songwriter DAMIEN blends elements of pop, post-punk and electronica in his darkwave melodies. Releasing music to the masses for the past couple of years, DAMIEN has received critical acclaim from numerous blogs and reaches audiences far beyond his Australian borders. Described as “…shifting broader community attitudes so everyone can experience love, acceptance and connection” (Scenestr) and “…a brash exploration of self that demands a second listen” (AMNPLIFY), DAMIEN is something everyone should experience. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Hurts’.
In an interview with The Other Side Reviews (that’s us), DAMIEN shared that “…inspiration is constant and feels like an immense ball of energy deep within my soul that I can feel swelling in my chest and churning in my stomach…music is how I find a release for that energy” – and this is certainly evident in his new single ‘Hurts’.
Following the well-received tracks ‘Joy (In My Own Time)’ and ‘Empty’, DAMIEN showcases a completely different sound to listeners with ‘Hurts’. Retaining synth-influenced tones, there is the comfort of a post-punk style; however, ‘Hurts’ is far heavier, harder and darker than DAMIEN’s previous material. Introducing elements of hard rock into his music, ‘Hurts’ presents a gritty, grimy, rugged and rough soundscape. In fact, the brashness of the pounding drums and dynamic guitars collide with gruff vocals leaning toward the metal sound of Marilyn Manson.
Creepy, spine-chilling, breath-taking and mind-numbing, ‘Hurts’ expresses the tragic painfulness of heartache. DAMIEN explains that ‘Hurts’ “…is centred on pain and shares beautiful yet tragic imagery and metaphors that delicately describe the heart ache of experiencing a unique connection with someone only for that connection to become nothing more than a distant memory in a matter of days…”
Slithering in your ear, rattling about your brain and sending ice-cold shivers through your veins, DAMIEN releases his daring single ‘Hurts’.
