DAME – Bite (2021)

If Pale Waves were to have a love child with Tame Impala and it was raised by Foals, then DAME would be it…and I bet it would be an adorable kid if their music is anything to go by. Formed in 2016 after frontwoman Shannon found George, Jake and Matt (we won’t go into how each member was found), the group began sharing their unique music with the masses. Touring the UK, featuring on notable blogs (When The Horn Blows, Indie Midlands, etc) and gaining support from radio stations, DAME is building a loyal fanbase. The latest addition to their discography is ‘Bite’.

Based In Birmingham, the foursome is at the hub of the UK indie music scene. The energetic and engaging performances are taking them stride to stride, but their original material is what keeps them at your fingertips. Following their alt-pop ballad ‘Cold Water’, ‘Bite’ is an evolution to a rougher form of indie-pop. Adopting both an “in your face” and “hushed wistfulness” approach with their melody, DAME showcase eclecticism ‘Bite’. An exquisite combination of pounding drums, underlying keys and dynamic guitars plunge you into a hazy swirl of sound. Yet, while there is a languid smoothness, ‘Bite’ certainly has a bite in the diversifying melody.

Written as “the ultimate anti-love song”, ‘Bite’ touches on aspects of confusion, control and confidence. Shannon Farmer’s bold vocals meld effortlessly with the upbeat instrumentation, but it is the witty lyricism that adds a grittiness to the track. Launching into a realm of empowerment and self-belief, DAME embraces the present by putting themselves first. Moreover, the edge in Farmer’s voice seems to add an anthemic quality as the verses crescendo into a catchy chorus. Think the obscurity of Billie Eilish with the sexiness of Miley Cyrus, but with a little more style.

“‘Bite’ is the ultimate anti-love song that will make you want to turn the lights down and the volume up. It’s all about taking control and getting what you want, setting your standards high and putting yourself first, forgetting your emotions and embracing the moment…it’s a big tease.” – Shannon Farmer on ‘Bite’
