Dama Juda – Goodbye (2021)

Not all breakups are straightforward as you might find the door you think you have closed constantly opening up again. The raw struggle of dealing with this type of breakup forms the foundation of ‘Goodbye’ by Dama Juda. Through the single, she considers the toll continually saying goodbye can have while trying to recover from the initial emotional hit of the relationship ending.

The single has a stronger beat than her previous releases which were much sadder than this. With a desire to write something a little more fun than usual, Dama Juda changed things up for a refreshing vibe. Pulling on a range of influences, she looks to infuse a little more excitement than sadness into her music.

Dama Juda’s vocals pull you into the thoughtful lyrics of ‘Goodbye’ from the first second. She hits you with the emotions of a relationship ending with the opening lyrics. This slides into the honest struggle of dealing with these emotions. Her performance is wonderfully emotive with this tender edge that perfectly captures the rollercoaster of emotions threaded into the track. On the verses, you slowly build yourself up after the breakup only for your ex to come back on the chorus and set the progress you have made back. There is a vulnerability in the lyrics that are easy to connect with as you feel the toll the constant goodbyes have on her.

Beneath her emotive performance is a gentle opening melody. The plucked tones draw you into an almost neon soundscape before thrusting you into the lush chorus. The layers of the melody on the chorus enhance the lyrics as your emotions are bolstered on the chorus with the re-entry of the ex. This dips for something more hushed on the verses as the lyrics build up.

Dama Juda captivates you with the raw struggle and emotional toll that comes from repeatedly having to say ‘Goodbye’. There is a wonderful richness to the melody that you sink into as the lyrics pull you into the story of the single. Her vocal performance is emotive as she fills you with the struggle and setbacks of the story.
