Dalles Jacobus – My Goodbye (2024)
In difficult days, it is important to find the shining light in bad situations and this is evident in the musical career of Dalles Jacobus. Born into an athletic family, US-based Jacobus spent most of his youth playing sports going on to be a Defensive Tackle on the University of Iowa football team. Along with his athletic endeavours, Jacobus grew up singing and performing with choirs in his school years; however, it was only in his sophomore year at university that his passion for music started burning bright. Unfortunately, Jacobus suffered a back injury (that’s the bad bit), however during his time off he picked up a guitar, taught himself how to play, and began sharing his soulful tunes with friends, family and the internet (that’s the shining light). Now, he performs around Iowa building a name as one of the most exciting emerging artists in contemporary country music.
Following well-received tracks ‘Bad Day To Be A Bear’ and ‘Round Here’, ‘My Goodbye’ is a unique rock twist on vintage country music. Similar to ‘Bad Day To Be A Bear’, a strong alternative rock flavour is heard in ‘My Goodbye’ potentially lying within the realm of Americana. Then again, the intensity of a hard rock/alternative rock tone overrides any blues, root-rock or folk typical of Americana.
In my opinion, Jacobus is a rocker with a country soul as his singles, particularly ‘My Goodbye’ have the traditional country vibe merely clinging to its hard-hitting rock twist. Needless to say, the gritty twang of Jacobus’ vocals falls in line with Chris Stapleton and Jason Aldean; yet obscure uniqueness bursts forth creating a sound that is entirely Dalles Jacobus and nothing else.
Transferring the electric infectiousness of his live shows to a studio single, ‘My Goodbye’ is an intoxicating song with live performance vibes. The soul-stirring melody has a toe-tapping groove; however, its intricacy lies beyond the charming country surface. Poignant poetic lyricism evokes a sense of melancholy in the tender tune lilting at vulnerability but with a deal of empowering self-reflection. Like I said, the silver light in a dark situation.
