Daggerplay – Insomnia (2022)
Daggerplay is letting us know that rock ’n’ roll is not dead, with their striking single ‘Insomnia’. Bringing the character of Johnny, who has been around for ages as a restless anti-hero, across countless rock songs, the band weaves a captivating tale into raging and relentless rock melodics. As Johnny runs around and shadow fights, the moon grins down at him knowing that there will be no rest for our intrepid hero.
Wrapping the story of Johnny’s night in a coating of reckless bass, packed guitars and a racing groovy drum, the band will have you addicted to their sound. This is great because you can easily fall into the engaging back catalogue of the band. Sirpa Immonen (drums, percussion), Tommi Luostarinen (guitar, backing vocals), Pekko Mantzin (lead vocals, guitars) and Bryan Ugartechea (bass, backing vocals) came together to form the band in 2011, mixing late 70s tones with their punk and rock ’n’ roll style, for a sound that is sure to drive you crazy.
‘Insomnia’ races through your senses with the raging guitars that shake you up from the inside out. There is a wonderful mixture of styles in the melody with the punch of punk meeting the energetic tones of rock making you want to jump around. There is a recklessness to the melody that drives you a little crazy, while making you want to turn the volume up. The raging tones of the music don’t let up for a second, bringing the spiral of Johnny’s insomnia to sonic glory. There are these guitar riffs that fly out of the melody, grab you by the shoulders and shake you in the best way possible. You can’t listen to this song and stay still.
As the melody is shaking your insides and filling you with a restless energy, the vocals bring a punk-rock punch to the lyrics. The lyrics tell the tale of Johnny and his desire for destruction that is fuelled by his insomnia. Through the verses, the band punches out the story of the track, before making you jump in the chorus and shout with them. The recklessness of the melody is enhanced by the wild abandon of the vocals that have you bouncing off the walls and feeling the dizzying spiral of insomnia. If the melody made you move, the vocals are sure to have you jumping like crazy and wildly playing imaginary instruments.
