DAAY – Flight (2022)

With a reputation for energetic and engaging performances, six-piece DAAY has built a loyal following across the UK; however, it is not only British audiences that they are impressing. Numerous features from Post Punk, Sinusoidal Music, Fresh Mango, Obscure Sound, Berlin On Air, Edgar Allan Poets, and Iggy Magazine (to name a few) see DAAY reaching international audiences. The latest addition to their critically acclaimed repertoire is the single ‘Flight’.

Following their single ‘Golden Tree’, DAAY seem to bring the old-school funk-rock sounds of the 70s to a 90s alternative rock melody sprinkled with tinges of modern-day pop. What I love about DAAY is how they drag us back to the sounds of yesteryear but retain a contemporary flow bringing a nostalgically familiar to fresher notions. In ‘Flight’ you are immediately tossed into a whirlpool of sound where the instrumentation sends flits of bright multi-coloured light across your eyes. Scorching guitar riffs have your soul soaring, while the drumbeats allow for an anchored foundation; then again, the vocal execution seeps into your skin so you’re flying but also feeling comfortably grounded with ‘Flight’.

One of the more interesting parts of ‘Flight’ is the immediate cessation in the melody about a minute in. It is like DAAY is saying, “well, welcome to our world and prepare for the flight ahead”. I love it, along with the guitar ending the song with a powerful flair. My one complaint about this is that it ended too soon.

Along with the outstanding melody filled with groovy vibes, DAAY has outstanding lyrical content enhancing the intimacy with their listeners. The band explain that ‘Flight’ ‘…is about inevitable transformation from one thing to the next, originally inspired by the book Jonathan Livingstone Seagull by Richard Bach. The song is about aiming to reach higher in life by focusing on what could be rather than what is…the intentional use of experimentalism aims to capture a feral quality.”

Sincere, sentimental, honest and empowering, DAAY astound me once more with their overwhelmingly awesome music.
