Cyrano – White Wine (2021)

Merging elements of R&B, soul, jazz and contemporary pop, Cyrano easily hypnotises you with his smooth crooning and charming melodies. Residing in London, the Scottish-born singer-songwriter has a knack for dreaming up enchanting tunes and “making music for the late-night overthinkers”. A new boy on the block, Cyrano is still a minnow, however, his refreshing sound is grabbing the attention of many critics. Receiving coverage from Talk About Pop Music, Glam Glare, Dansende Beren, Right Chord Music, Music of the Future, BBC Introducing and In Tune Music, this young lad is reaching audiences globally. We have the honour of reviewing his debut single ‘White Wine’.

Joining forces with renowned producer Oli Barton-Wood, Cyrano presents a beautifully textured and arranged single in ‘White Wine’. One may consider the fusion of guitars, synths, piano and an interspersed saxophone to have an overwhelming effect, however, the expertly layered effect makes ‘White Wine’ seem simplistic. Each element receives a degree of prominence while melding into a harmonic tapestry with shimmering threads. The most intriguing part for me is the use of electric and acoustic instruments bringing attention to a synthetic meets organic sound – or perhaps I’m just overthinking things.

A collaborative effort, ‘White Wine’ takes a bit from different musicians resulting in an outstanding track. Leif Erikson’s Sam Johnston lays a foundation with his dynamic guitar while Cyrano takes on the synths and beats. Yet, it is Jazzi Bobbi’s swelling saxophone and Cyrano’s delicate piano that prompts powerful crescendos to catchy choruses and a hazy swirl of sound. The interaction of instruments is significant making the song easy to sway to, but it is the bold vocals that give ‘White Wine’ its edge.

Falling between the beats, saxophone and piano, Cyrano’s dulcet tones soothe your soul with its smoothness. Oddly enough, the melody may be harmonic, enchanting and lighthearted, but the lyricism shows a more poignant side to ‘White Wine’. Showcasing his eclecticism and innovativeness as an artist, Cyrano looks at the fragility of human connections using a robust sonic experience. Filled with sincerity and sentimentality, ‘White Wine’ has a complexity that transcends time and space with delicate execution.
